TRUTH at Mavericks Nov. 24

On a frigid Sunday night it looked like an episode of The Walking Dead inside Mavericks, but these zombies weren’t looking for flesh, they were craving beats.

Andre Fernandez, half of TRUTH, a DJ duo from New Zealand, had the crowd in quite the trance. He stirred up such a frenzy even a pregnant woman was dancing up a storm to the dubstep.

TRUTH was bringing it on this night.  The Kiwi DJ did his stuff in front of a pretty darn good crowd for a Sunday night at Mavericks, which is not known for hosting electronic shows. He integrated some really stellar ska and reggae beats into his mixes and delivered very interesting drops.  If you are into the very aggressive dubstep that sounds like non-stop Transformers morphing then TRUTH is not for you, but if you like your dubstep with some added musicality, creativity and smooth flows check these guys out. You can listen to their latest mix below, you can also download it for free on their Soundcloud.

Dubstep is quite the special style of electronic music.  The heavy bass laden tunes full of drops is quite polarizing.  You rarely hear people say ”I kind of like dubstep.” You generally like it or hate, or endure it on a date like my buddy’s girl.  But at the same time it has this magical way of attracting people from all walks of life and styles.  There were people all dolled up in flashy colours and six different colours in their hair, people in spiked leather jackets, ages young and not so young, people with socks in sandals dancing next to someone who looked like she spent three hours getting ready. You get the idea.  It is a strangely unifying style that seems to appeal to people of all musical genres, well almost.

I unfortunately missed all the local acts on the bill, Alien Rainforest, Sticks & Stones Dubs and Bass Jugglers, but I heard they represented Ottawa very well. I will hopefully catch them another time.

On a side note, going to the washroom located right behind the stage during a dubstep show is terrifying.
