Ottawa label and DIY artist collective Pop Drone have dropped the first instalment of a new series of remixes called Remix Ottawa. The Rotterdam dynamic duo Dialoog (which means ‘dialogue’ in Dutch) recently did a residency at Café Nostalgica, where they got to know what happens here in our little corner of the planet. Yuri Bakker & Michael Powell (trained at Julliard & Berkeley, respectively) aren’t quite finished with Ottawa just yet. A couple weeks ago we watched them play an innovative live set at Banned II, which took place Babylon Nightclub. However, Dialoog wasn’t actually at Babylon. With help of event organizers Jackpine, their set was streamed from two separate locations in Amsterdam and New Orleans where the two were coordinating via Skype.

Pop Drone, which house Dialoog under their label, released a 10-track playlist remixes in conjunction with the release of Guerilla Magazine‘s latest issue. The kicker is that all of the tracks are remixes of Ottawa-area artists, too. Their dance-inducing, electro-psych dream pop cosmic tendencies bleed through these remixes, which offers a really different take on the ten artists they chose to re-imagine.

Here’s what Michael Powell AKA Absolut of Dialoog had to say (courtesy of popdrone.ca):

As long as I’ve been visiting Canada, Ottawans have seemed surprised and tend to ask “why?” in a way that first caught me off-guard. I even get the sense that some base the notion of Dialoog being at all cool on the fact that we’re from Europe and spending time in NYC. There’s strange talk about Ottawa having a “weak” scene or little going on. That’s just whack. I know it. You know it. With this remix project, we’d like to turn others onto the music and musicians in town that we’ve come to discover and enjoy. This volume only scratches the surface. More to come in 2014.
