New Video: “Sweet Surrender” by Hyf Gypsy Sun

A day before the offical Hallmark holiday, Ottawa’s Hyf Gypsy Sun released a new video for his track “Sweet Surrender” dedicating it to all those who hate Valentine’s Day.

Far from being an anti-love song, Hyfidelik raps about the necessity of finding and loving yourself before you can give back. The video starts with a quote by spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar saying much of the same: “Find the love you seek, by first finding the love within yourself…”

The video centres around a character played by Jean-Pierre Friquin, a.k.a. MC Just Peace of hip hop trio Just Poets, going through relationship woes. The slate-coloured tinge and choppy scene editing of the video reflect the character’s melancholy. Hyf Gypsy Sun enters the video knowing his friend needed him, and helps him return to the light, as is represented by a change in the video’s tinge near the end.

With another third of Just Poets producer Jeepz on the beats, “Sweet Surrender” is a fresh track of uplifting percussion with contemplative sax and keys. Hyf Gypsy Sun’s adept lyrics don’t skip a beat and shine brightly as he runs through a rap hymn praising self-love. We’re reminded that love can’t be bought in a store, it comes from within.
