It’s always exciting to see new artists coming up in the capital, and one that has caught my attention lately is singer-songwriter Vi (pronounced, as she puts it—”Vi like Viagara”). The Hintonburg-based artist released a new video for her single “Clover” in late December, one that caps off a busy year for her.

The video for “Clover” is preceded by her searing Blackwater EP and a previous single “I Fall Apart,” on top of her 2-track project that the single is featured on called Two—all of which were released in 2018. Vi has a couple aces up her sleeve—strong production on all her tracks and superior vocal control. Noir sad pop artists such as Lykke Li, BANKS, Sampha, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde have made their careers by putting their vocals front-and-centre, along with high-end production that elevates songs and creates a refined end product. Vi’s music does this while transcending genres. While much of her music takes a melancholic approach, there are climactic peaks and restrained valleys that she explores fearlessly. She takes elements of R&B, modern hip hop, and art pop and implements them into her sound and arrangements in a way that keeps the listener wanting more.

“Clover” was shot by Megan Landry in Vi’s very own neighbourhood of Hintonburg, where she can be seen singing alone in Fil’s Diner and West Park Bowling on Wellington West late at night. The neon diner lights and cosmic bowling alley black lights perfectly suit the vibe of the song.

On top of this, it was just announced that Vi is one of two Ottawa emerging artists chosen to compete on the new season of CTV’s The Launch. She and Michelle Treacy will appear on the show starting on January 30th along with 28 other Canadian artists. Be sure to tune in and support local artists!
